From the Grave!

Hey there everyone, got a few Undead goodies for ya today, Not much to say about them other than a few paint schemes you may like so let us dive in with Molly first.

I wanted something a little different than the hot orange or the mustard yellow they put her in for the two concept arts, and thought blue and purple would contrast nicely with the Neon green flame I gave her.
The blue of her dress is "Emerald" from the vallejo line with a glaze of GW's blue over it, quite simple. the Green flame is my standard concoction of  P3 inks, 1 part yellow/1 part green, though I'm tempted to switch to 2 parts yellow / 1 part green.

Next up we have my Rotting Belles and my Dead Doxy. I rather like these models, I think a lot of people do. I find their clothing quite fun to paint up and experiment with. For their rotting flesh I did a base coat of thrall flesh from P3, then a wash of purple from Secret weapon washes, and then built up another layer of thrall flesh for that bruised look.

This is actual painting sorcery here kids. and you too can do it in less than 15 minutes. Prime white, Base coat in the Technical paint "Nihilakh oxide" from GW, and then drybrush white. BAM! instant ghosts.

Finally we have my Valevictorian, Not much to say about this model, mostly just brought together some effects that I learned all over. All I can really say is I love what a beater this model is.

That's all for now, I'm blowing through malifaux stuff though so stay tuned for that if you like the stuff I do. If you have any ideas or suggestions of what I should paint or a particular color scheme please leave a comment or get in contact with me I'd love to hear some.

Molly's playground (scenic graveyard board)

Hey everyone sorry for the slow progress, but I've been working on completing my first big scenic display board.

Small background before we begin I have always wanted to make one of these but never tried my hand at it. After looking at a few different ways online and having worked with Cork for a while I decided that was how I was going to more said scenic board work.

I tried out a small one with some pillars first. It looked alright but I consider it mostly a failure as the pillars don't go over the board properly. It just looks out of whack. It did give me some valuable information on how I should work with the next board though.

This was the start, measuring out how far the bases should be from each other, and where the placement should be before putting the walls down. To get a rough size of how big the holes needed to be I took a 30mm, 40mm, and 50mm base and drew a circle around the with a permanent marker, before cutting the holes out.

Once this was done I glued down the cork to the board and started to apply white glue where I could, then added the sand mixture I made up ( Fine sand, Stone sand, Stone "shards", and some fine basalt all mixed together) and let it dry taking care to not let the mixture pour over into the holes.

Now that the base was ready I primed it black.

Then gave it a dry brushing of Apple barrel "Chocolate bar"

Then a dry brushing of Vallejo Flat earth and a brushing of Menoth white base on top of that.

For the Stonework I used Fortress grey from Games workshop, gunmetal with a wash of black for the metalwork, and for the flowers I used GW's Purple and Vallejo's Golden olive color.

That's all for now but I plan to be working on Molly and her Summons crew all week so Maybe I'll throw up more than one update.

See ya'll soon!

Updates incoming

Hey everyone, I've been working on a scenic board recently that you will probably be able to see details of tomorrow eveing after I get it and a bunch of Graveyard bases primed for ease of painting. I've just been a little busy with work this week (was spring break) and haven't had much time to do anything with painting.

I do have things coming down the pipes, It's just slow moving right now, I'll have updates soon.

Little shop of Horrors

Hey everyone small update today as I have several things in the works (one of which you'll see at the end of the post)  but for now let's get to the thing I've been excited about for a couple of days now.

The shifting loyalties campaign I am joining at my LGS as it's first optional assignment is awarding players who bring a 50mm plant marker. This inspired me to bust out my sodapop miniatures and look for the large carnivorous plant miniature to paint it up. (Killing multiple birds with one stone may I add).

I decided to prime the thing white, and then do the flowers and head the bright blue I've used on the Slaaneshi daemons before, Hit it with a blue ink in the mouths and a purple wash from secret weapon on the outside before adding magenta.

I used Warboss green for the body and the darker caliban green for the leaves before hitting them with an algae wash also from secret weapon, before gently applying a dab of magenta to the tip of each leaf.

The teeth are my tried and true method of Menoth white, Sepia wash, & lightly drybrushed bone.

That's pretty much all for today, most of this past week has been prep work for starting in on a few crews, and building up terrain. I attempted to do a battle report but the camera I took all the photos on doesn't want to work with me so might be a while before those come up, if they do at all. I'm going to blame not having the models I wanted to use not being painted as the problem.

Anyway upcoming stuff. This week I plan to work on my newly gotten Resurrectionists as my doorway is flooded with more boxes of their stuff. This beautiful little piece that came in a day or so ago convinced me it's what I should paint next.

After that I'm painting up a figure for the "Fight!" theme of a local painting competition... It may be a little on the nose but I'm probably going to be doing up Yokozuna from the soda pop line as E.Honda.

Have a great week!

Welcome Back

So let me start out this post with an apology for not updating for so long. I'm not gonna blame life, but ultimately a bunch of stuff came up, and I felt I just didn't have enough stuff painted to a decent quality that I felt like I could actually show it off.  So, I'm sorry.

What's changed?
Three things happened recently in my personal life that made me come back to this blog and really make me want to start doing it again.

The first of which is that I (re)started Malifaux, Which has in my opinion one of the consistently best communities I've ever encountered, and it's because of that, the quickness of the games, and the quality of the miniatures that I have become engrossed in the game.
I went to a local tournament this past weekend and not only came in tied 3 ways for 2nd (ultimately ending 4th) but won best painted crew, Which I honestly had not expected.

The second was that I entered a local painting competition held by a store, and I suspect I won 1st simply by the merit of the turn out being low, the amount of people who genuinely enjoyed the miniature I entered gave me a surge of inspiration that I felt I needed.

And finally the third thing. Being contacted by multiple people asking what happened to the blog. It may sound cheesy but it does inspire me to make more content when people ask me what happened and if I'm still working on stuff for the blog. Thank you all for inspiring me to restart this. I really do appreciate it.

Alright, so with all that out of the way, my future plans for the blog is to be about both stuff I'm working on and gaming things I'm interested in, so it might be painting one blog post, talking about a game the next, a tutorial after that, thinking about magic cards, ect.  I'm gonna try to keep personal life out of it, such as complaining about being sick which I notice I've done before, and I'm going try to do 1 post a week at the very least.

So with all of that crap out of the way lets take a look at a few models shall we?

First up is The "Large Arachnid" from Malifaux (It's actually a brass arachnid, which is supposed to be on a 30mm base....yeah I know right? But I managed to get 3 of them and decided to turn two into large arachnids because they hadn't announced a kit until about a week ago...)

Since my arcanists are themed around Colette's stage/ performance theme I wanted to make the spiders look like they were coming down off the curtains.

I feel I accomplished this quite well, and that the orange flames coming out of the spider work well with the metals of it. Not a clue what I'm going to do with the color of that base though...might go with a nice dark blue to contrast with the red and orange.

Looking back a little further at my Neverborn, I feel I can show these off now if only to reprimand myself for things I notice. We'll start with Jakob Lynch and The Hungering Darkness

I feel I did really well with the hungering darkness as I wanted a deepsea bio-luminescence to him kind of like an Angler fish I copied this on to a few other models with the brilliance mechanic and will probably do it again when I tackle the spawn mother. Lynch on the other hand while I feel I did well with him, I think I relied too heavily on a wash for his face, and fucked up his eyes in the process. I may go back and try to fix him later, but I'm going to blame being out of practice on this one.

My Lilith crew on the other hand I feel like I did really well with, my only complaint is that I can't seem to take a picture of this crew that is (to me) out of focus a little bit due to the red color I used. The young nephilim on the right was also the first model that I used the technical paint "Blood for the Blood God" on, which works really really well.

Well that's all for the is post, I want to know what you guys think about the changes to the blog and what you might do to make it less of a god damn eyesore. I'd also love to know what you all would like to see for the next painting segment. More Malifaux, some 40k, or some Super dungeon explore stuff?

Nurgle I'm not happy with you right now.

If there is one thing I don't like it's feeling ill. Especially where there isn't a major bug going around, and it hasn't bedridden me.  Just makes me feel awful.

On that note I haven't done much this week for Warhammer, all I painted before I started to feel "Bleh" was a converted up archon I made for my dark eldar.

Kind of basic as far as color schemes go but I like it. I made her from a couple of pieces the main being the lead vampire countess from the Coven throne. which I had to remove the head and file a hole into the body for the new head to fit.
I couldn't find a good enough slave for her to be "sitting" on since the model looks like it's lounging anyway. So I decided to pull a piece I hadn't used from my exalted chariot of Slaanesh kit to give her a "Floating" pedestal.
Looking back over the model it's obvious that I still need to do a few more things, Maybe some freehanding on the dress. But for now she looks good in my opinion, and a welcome stand in for an Archon, Lady Malys, or even a rule #63 version of Duke Sliscus  (Duchess Sliscus? I dunno)

Anyway that's it for this late edition of Wargame Wednesday, hopefully I'll have something new for friday, don't be surprised if it's late.

I can't hold all of these ideas....

So lets write them out and talk about the ideas in mind.

As I said, Dark elves are coming, but this shouldn't have been a surprise to anyone, they needed new hydras and witch elves, and their codex needed an update.

I'll tell you what though, when I saw the pictures of the models from the main site my Jaw damn near hit the floor. So I'm going to walk through these and say come conversion potentials that I see. Maybe I do them in the future, maybe I don't we'll see If I sell one of my other armies first.

So lets start with the Witch elves kit and then move to the Cauldron of Blood

First off just look at the animation of these models, The hair, the leaping pose...Looks great. I can already see people running these as Traitor guard, Daemonettes, Dark eldar wyches, Maybe even as banshee's or striking scorpions for some people.  This is one of those kits you are going to see sell like mad just for it's "sexy" conversion potential and then we get to the other half of the kit, The sisters of slaughter.

If these models don't scream "RUN US AS DAEMONS!" nothing does. Whips, those masks, Like....everything just comes together on that model and hey if you don't use them on the witch elves bodies, you can always save them for another model...

But here is the rub Ladies and Gentlemen, it's $60 for 10 of these models. While I'm not sure if $60 is worth it for ten, the kit is large and the sculpts look amazing.

Moving onto the other kit that I like (no not the hydra).
The Cauldron of Blood.

This model looks great, Even if not putting it together just piecing it out there are bits in here for tons of stuff, but lets start with the statue of the god himself Khaine.
Now This statue looks good, in my opinion I think it's better than the metal/finecast one that the eldar have now, I expect this piece will command high prices on Ebay probably in the 20-30 dollar range as people will be buying them up to use as their Avatar....if they use the Avatar of Khaine.
The girls on it look great, I suspect the one with the chalice will be sold separately from the other two as more people will want her as a character or some such.

The Cauldron itself looks great as a centerpiece of terrain or as an objective point, if I can find several of them for a good price that might be one of the next terrain pieces I do.

The pedastal that the Avatar is on is amazing and would be perfect for pillars, to denoting a special character, to just all sorts of things.

and lastly the stairs can be used for all sorts of terrain projects, Need a building to look a little more evil? Maybe an evil staircase will fix it. Might also go well with a diorama.

On the Bloodwrack shrine side of things.  The Naga-woman/Medusa looks great, I've been trying to make a serpent lady for my daemons forever and now (hopefully she's cheap) I can get a couple of them.

(I also like that they put what looks like a sorceress with 2 weapons into this kit, I like extra folks in boxes like the spider shaman that comes with the arachnarok spider.)

So that's my thoughts on what I might do with some of these if I play around with them, The models look super good, and I wish more people played fantasy around here so I might actually make a Dark Elves army. But conversions for the armies I play are good too.

See you folks later this week.

Would you like to join my bible black club?

So before we get to our featured presentation.

GW is releasing new Dark Elves in October.

And their models look better than fantastic.

Like....Literally All of the witch elves models look amazing. I am tempted to sell two of my armies to buy stuff for my Dark Eldar, and conversion stuffs for other armies. That's if I didn't decide to make a dark elves army.
I'll probably ramble more about this Sunday and what conversion ideas I'm already cooking up.

Anyway, You know what Game I Kickstarted ages ago and just re-found like 2 weeks ago?

Tentacle Bento.
It seems to be a fairly basic game With the concept being, You are an outerspace tentacle alien, Capture as many anime schoolgirls as you can before the schoolyear ends. I like the art, I wish each girl had their own art but I understand why they don't (saves on time and makes the regular students look more streamlined.)

"But SWL why are we talking about the game when this is a painting blog?" I hear you ask.
It did come with miniatures though, if you kicked in extra with the game. And I finally got around to painting the one I wanted this week.

So lets break this model down I decided to go with art from the cards as well as the original design document for the uniform (as well as a few of the liberties taken with some of the cosplayers on the main site)  unfortunately there seems to be some disparity between the design and the actual art so I went with a kind of mix. I went with magenta for the tentacle monster because I felt it fit as a whole, and I couldn't see doing green or turquoise for some reason, I couldn't find any students that looked like this model in the art so I decided to make her dark haired with a bit of color, I almost made her a platinum blond but didn't want the model too bright.

Her skirt was my first job at free-handing plaid which I don't think I did too well on but it still looks good so I'm calling it a win. The brickwork was done with some terracota mini-bricks I had, and the cherry blossom petals were some of the yellow petals that I used on flowers for my warjacks ages ago just painted pink.
Over all I'm happy with this model and I think the only thing I would want to do differently would be to apply some dripping water effects from the tentacles and leaking out of the bag.

Anyway that's painting for today, Comments and emails are always welcome, Check back Sunday for more stuff.

Now is the time for talking. (Q&A, Emails, upcoming posts)

So I would like to start of this post saying thank you to all those still occasionally checking it to see if I updated, or if you found this page by just surfing I'm glad something caught your attention and you liked it.

So first part of this, some emails I've been sent, If you would like to ask me a question leave a comment below, message me on my Tumblr, or send me an email at Slaaneshi.lord@gmail.com

Q: Why are there no new posts on the blog?
A: Well aside from having to drive up to Virginia twice in the past 2 months I've been involved with several other things (Friends, Demoing games, prepping for a large tournament, ect.)  that have simply been eating up my time. On top of that I for some reason felt I needed to take a little break from painting, each time I would sit down I would get too distracted and start making stuff instead of painting, which is usually a good sign you need a break.

Q: What will you be painting next for your blog?
A: While I have nothing concrete lined up, I do have several works in progress, the top of the list is my dark eldar The Kabal of the Crimson Shrike. I have all the models primed and they should be simple to complete once I start to streamline them. Other than that, I have a bunch of Super dungeon explore models I want to paint up, I picked up a Cthulhu from the Reaper: Bones line that I want to paint, I may have a commission for some tau soon, and People have expressed that they want to see more of the traitor guard of Slaanesh, so look forward to that stuff.

Q: Do you take suggestions for what to paint next or blog about?
A: I sure do, Leave a comment, send me a message or an email and let me know what you are thinking.

Q:Do you plan to review more board and card games?
A: Yes, There will be more. I'm tempted to do some extended video game reviews here as well, but I really can't say much as I've been playing mostly games like Skyrim and LoL recently.

Q: How many armies do you own and/or what are they? Are any fully painted?
A: For 40k I own:  Daemons, Chaos space marines, Traitor guard, Dark eldar, and Tyranids.
Warhammer fantasy: Goblins, Warriors of chaos, Daemons (but I'll probably never play them in fantasy)
Warmachine: Menoth and Skorne
Malifaux: The dreamer (Who the fuck plays Malifaux? Am I rite?)
They are all not fully painted but menoth is the closest to being fully painted. only having 5 models I can think of without a paintjob done to them.

Q: I want to play _______ army, what do you recommend?
A: Well I first recommend you go and check out 1d4chan.org , if you don't find what you need there then shoot me an email, I'll be honest I don't know much outside the armies I play, and most of the time my meta is kind of weird so I don't know how much I can really help but I'll do my damnedest.

Q: Have you considered doing game write-up's?
A: I considered it but I find them boring. I might in the future if I play a particularly good game/opponent.

Q: Have you considered having guest segments?
A: Yes and I would appreciate them, send me an email if you have something cool or want to review something cool.

Q: Can I send you artwork, Pictures of my armies, or neat conversions I've come across?
A: Yes, If I like it enough I may just steal it, Giving credit of course.

Q: Can I send you stuff through the mail?
A: I'd prefer you didn't, makes me feel a little uncomfortable getting something for nothing. I mean if you really really realllllly don't want it I suppose I will take it, send me an email, but don't feel the need to send me anything the blog is supposed to be about showing off models and maybe teaching something, not about me getting free stuff.

That's it for questions for now, But keep an eye peeled for my next blog post, I'll have something to show off and talk about why Eldar have me super salty right now.

TAKE THAT OBJECTIVE SOLDIER!

Welcome, Today I wanted to show some easy objective markers that you can make with some left over models you have sitting around.

These first ones I'll show you I made four of for $5 + the models used. You start by going to Michaels (or other craft store) and getting some wedding cake pillars, you want the smallest they have as they will still be tall enough to tower over a rank and file model but more importantly you can put a 28mm round base into the top of them, thus allowing you to place a model on the pillar. From there it's a simple matter of choosing what models you want to go on top (if you don't glue the base in you could have multiple "statues" and replace them when you get tired of looking at them.) But enough talk lets take a look at the four I made today (the sister of battle one was the first I did almost 3 years ago).

To get the models looking like they did I primed them white and then for the newest four, I applied vallejo's rich gold alcohol based paint and then went over it with a sepia wash. (for some reason the marines that I primed gathered snowy build up of flat primer which can happen when the humidity is high, just another reason not to prime models right before it's about to rain.)
For the sister I used green gold of the same brand and then hit her with a ton of badab black wash (nuln oil now).

But my last objective marker is by far the biggest and usually the one people like the most. Considering that I originally made it as an Infinity "set piece" and it got relegated to the realm of interesting projects on my desk, I thought it was time to try and finish it.

"Now wait just a minute." I hear you say. "I've seen plenty of test subjects and even people in tubes in miniatures...What's so special about this one?"
Well if you notice the tube has a hole in the bottom. There is a reason for this. Several years back laser cut crystals were "Hot-shit" and came with semi-large bases which would light up and show off the laser cut images.

Can you guess what's underneath her tube now?

And yes. it does change colors, the unit I recieved even seems to flicker when it tries to shift to yellow or red, giving the tank a nice look of "low power"

That's all for today, Gonna have some dreadball stuff up later this week, as I'm painting a commission for someone.

From the operating table.

So I kitbashed another couple of miniature for your viewing pleasure. Unfortunatly no painted wargame stuff this week, holding off to see if an acquaintance at my LGS wants his Blood Angels painted, that way I might get all the red I have waiting done in one swoop.

So, first off lets check out the Haemonculus.

As you can see I used the scourge body with the kablite officer sword and wych pistol, then attached two talos vestigial arms (oh how I wish the scalpel one would have fit.) They syringe needs fixing after an unfotunate accident, but it should be easy with the talos spines I have lying around.

Moving on to the wracks.

Now I really like these guys (and gals) using the scourge chests along with wych legs gave them the first "medical experiment" look I was going for, and then I was amazed to discover I had almost enough right and left dagger arms to give the entire group their two weapons. I wound up chopping some of their tanks, and replacing them with talos vestigial limbs, to make them even more twisted, and I'm sure you can tell the "Liquifier gun" is a Tyranid devourer.  I think giving this entire unit the masks was a good move, hiding their twisted and pained faces.

There is one that I like above the rest though, I've nicknamed her "The mantis".

 Next up, converted hellions/beastmasters.

Now I like the hellion models, quite a bit, Almost enough to make me want to take a full unit of them with the baron that makes them a scorning unit....But I don't like them quite that much. That being said I also love the beastmasters, and considering I am committing to the bird theme I really want to have a full unit of beastmasters with as many razorwings as I can fit into the unit. (so if you know of a good razorwing flock proxy or conversion idea leave me a comment below.)

Finally we have the archon whom now has his helmet with large horns, though I have yet to decide what I should do for his base...considering either skulls or ruined scenery.

As always feel free to leave comments, ideas, ect. and I'll see you guys on friday.
